Olmert: Israel Must Be Prepared for War [Israel National News]

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told his cabinet and the heads of Israel's intelligence agencies that Israel needs to prepare for war, despite the estimates that war with Syria was unlikely this year. "We must also prepare for things that are not very likely to happen," Olmert said at the close of the government session Sunday.

Olmert also announced he would be holding cabinet discussions at frequent intervals, in order to study the conclusions the IDF was reaching as it studied the Lebanon war, and to make sure lessons were being learned and implemented.

I haven't had the time to read the Jerusalem Post lately; what is the situation with Syria and why is war being called to the forefront? Perhaps Syria is connected with some of the insurgent attacks on Israel?

Also, I know that it's your blog, but I ask that you please do not censor my comments to your blog in the future. You may even edit my comments if you feel there is anything explicit, but I don't consider it very dignified to just not show them. We must be direct with one another.

It has nothing to do with censorship and everything to do with taking the time to respond properly; I like to read and respond when I publish the comments made. No offense meant; I'm just swamped lately and busy with prioritizing news/information posts versus more long-range topic commentary.

As to the role played by Syria-- Damascus is an Iranian puppet government that, in turn, manages Hizbollah's activities in Lebanon. Couple this with the ongoing demands for Israel to return the Golan Heights and Syria's continual support of Palestinian terror, and you can understand why Syria is a threat to Israel.

As to the IDF predictions that war with Syria is inevitable, a good deal of that has to do with the reasons mentioned above. It also has to deal with certain matters of basic military strategy.
